Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship Timeline and Facts
Medical Student Summer Research Fellowships- Fact Sheet for summer 2018 Program
The Wayne State University School of Medicine has an established Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship program (MSSRF). A mentored research fellowship can be set up with WSU faculty and also with mentors at Henry Ford Hospital. The mentored activity may be in a basic science research program, or a clinical/outcomes study. All research is performed under the mentorship of a Wayne State SOM faculty member or adjunct faculty member.
The MSSRF fellowships are competitive and limited in number. Awarded students will receive a stipend of $3,000 for 9 weeks of research during the summer. Work designed to be performed over less than 9 weeks may also be submitted, however, if deemed competitive and awarded, the stipend will be prorated for the time invested. The faculty sponsor stipend is $1,000 and must be paid into an appropriate WSU or HFHS account.
Briefly, the steps to apply to the Medical Student Summer Research Program are:
- You choose a WSU- or HFH-associated research mentor with whom to study. In an effort to increase the opportunities for students who wish to perform clinical or outcomes research, we are expanding our pool of mentors to include adjunct WSU faculty at affiliated hospitals, but we may not be aware of all the possible mentors at these locations.
- Students in collaboration with their selected mentor are to prepare a description of the summer project. Guidelines will be available on our website, or by request from the Office of Medical Student Research.
- Submit your application to our office!
The only two stipulations imposed for competing for the MSSRF fellowships are:
1) The student research should be a project designed for you to learn and participate in the approach to medical research, including formulating an hypothesis, experimental design and executing the work (as well as analyzing the results) within the 9 week fellowship window.
2) That the sponsoring mentor must have an official appointment with Wayne State University (e.g. full-time or adjunct faculty appointment).
