Pharmacology

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America Foundation- Paul Cabresi Medical Student Research Fellowship

http://www.phrmafoundation.org/2018-awards/other-awards/clinical-pharmacology/paul-calabresi-medical-student-fellowship/

Program Description

Clinical pharmacology is the science of developing and using drugs in the treatment of patients. It is underpinned by the basic science of pharmacology, with added focus on the application of pharmacological principles and methods in the real world. It has a broad scope, from the discovery of new target molecules to the effects of drug use in whole populations.

Clinical pharmacology connects the gap between medical practice and laboratory science. The clinical pharmacologist promotes the safety of prescriptions, maximizes the drug effects and minimizes the side effects. It is important that clinical pharmacologists interact with pharmacists who have special skill in the areas of drug information, medication safety and other aspects of pharmacy practice related to clinical pharmacology.

Clinical pharmacologists usually have a rigorous medical and scientific training which enables them to evaluate evidence and produce new data through well-designed studies. Clinical pharmacologists must have access to enough outpatients for clinical care, teaching and education, and research in collaboration with other medical sub-specialists. Their responsibilities to patients include, but are not limited to analyzing adverse drug effects, therapeutics, and toxicology including reproductive toxicology, cardiovascular risks, perioperative drug management, and psychopharmacology.

Prerequisites

Students who are not already in a training sequence leading to a research career or students already in an M.D./Ph.D. program for whom additional financial support is appropriate are both eligible to apply. Awards will not be made to a student in a M.D./Ph.D. program who is entering the last 2 years of medical school. The commitment must be full-time. Depending on the medical school curriculum and length of the fellowship, the student will usually have to interrupt his or her scholastic training to fulfill the full-time requirement of the program. A candidate must be enrolled in a US medical/dental school and have finished at least one year of the school curriculum. Priority consideration will be given to those candidates who project strong commitments to careers in the field of clinical pharmacology. The applicant must be sponsored by the pharmacology or clinical pharmacology program in which the investigative project is to be undertaken. The sponsoring unit must have a demonstrated commitment to training in the fields of pharmacology or clinical pharmacology. As clinical pharmacology is a part of the broad field of pharmacology, the specific research project conducted during the tenure of the fellowship may be in any area of pharmacology. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
