Cardiology

American Heart Association / American Stroke Association Student Scholarships

Program Description

The scientific councils of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association want to stimulate interest, knowledge and investigative work in students in medicine, nursing, public health, nutrition and other allied health disciplines. AHA Student Scholarships support students conducting research projects related to cardiovascular disease, stroke and basic sciences early during pre-doctoral training, usually during the summer. AHA scholarships provide valuable stipends for students during the research project. The scholarship stipends may be used for student expenses, lab fees, or other costs incurred by the student during the project.

Prerequisites

Eligible applicants include students in medical schools or in master's or equivalent programs in an accredited school in the United States where research training in cardiovascular disease and stroke is available. PhDs and current MD/PhD students in the basic sciences committed to research careers are ineligible unless the PhD was obtained previously in an area not related to the one in the proposed study.
Each applicant and applicant's preceptor must be members of the AHA/ASA at the time of application.
The awards will be made to institutions within the United States in which the research training is available to students under qualified supervision. If the student conducts the research at a location other than his/her home institution, he/she must have written approval of his/her dean or other responsible individual.

 

North American Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis Research Fellowship

Program Description

The NASTH Research Fellowship is an 8-10 week program aimed at introducing students to the field of hemostasis and thrombosis by supporting the students' work on targeted research projects. The experience includes collaboration with a research mentor, and preparation and presentation at the bi-annual THSNA Summit.
The research focus may be lab-based, clinical or epidemiology research. Applicants are required to develop a research proposal in consultation with their mentor that can be completed within the 8 - 10 week fellowship period. Prior research experience is not required but is considered favorably, along with demonstrated academic achievement, service and leadership.

Prerequisites

First, second or third year medical students, PhD students, or MD/PhD students.
Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada at the time of application.

 

 

Endocrinology

Endocrine Society Summer Research Fellowship

Program Description

The Endocrine Society offers Summer Research Fellowships to encourage promising undergraduate students, medical students, and first year graduate school students to pursue careers in endocrinology. The Society provides a stipend to each award recipient to participate in research projects under the guidance of a Society member for 10 to 12 weeks during the summer. After the summer fellowship, recipients are invited to attend ENDO 2018, the Society's Annual Meeting & Expo and will receive complimentary registration, airfare and lodging, and per diem for the duration of the meeting.

Prerequisites

Student applicants must meet the following requirements at the time of application:
Currently enrolled in school full-time and may not be employed as a research assistant.
Academic level must fall into one of the following categories:
All undergraduate students currently enrolled in a four year institution.
Graduate students in their first year (began graduate school Fall 2016).
Medical students who are beyond their first year of schooling.
Mentors must meet the following requirements at the time of application:
Must be active members in the Endocrine Society.
Only one application per mentor may be submitted.
Mentors who won a fellowship in 2016 are ineligible to sponsor an application.

 

Vanderbilt Diabetes Center Medical Student Research Training Program in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases

The Department of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health is offering research training opportunities to minority undergraduate, graduate and health professions students who have an interest in research experience in the areas of nutrition, tropical infectious diseases, reproductive health and/or sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS or chronic disease. Reading Hospital is offering 6-week internships in our Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology and Infectious Disease Departments. We have seven internships available -- two interns will be based in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Obstetrics Gynecology and will spend half of their time in research and half as clinical observers; one intern will spend the majority of time in Infectious Disease research, but will also participate in didactic sessions. Program Description

Each summer, the Department of Otolaryngology at OHSU offers a 10-week summer research internship open to medical students, with a stipend of ~$5000. Individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups as well as individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will work with a faculty member to conduct a research project with the aim of a published article, a (inter)national conference presentation, or both.

Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society- Grants in Aid of Research Program

Program Description

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences since 1922. By encouraging close working relationships between students and mentors, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning.
The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.
While membership in Sigma Xi is not a requirement for applying for funding from the Grants-in-Aid of Research program, approximately 75% of funds are restricted for use by dues paying student members of Sigma Xi or students whose project advisor is a dues paying member of Sigma Xi. Students from any country are eligible to receive funding.

Prerequisites

Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in degree seeking programs may apply.
Membership in Sigma Xi is not required to apply, although applicants who are dues paying members or whose project advisor is a dues paying member of Sigma Xi are more likely to be fully funded if their application is highly rated.

 

Pulmonology

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation- Student Traineeships

Program Description

Applicants may be undergraduates planning to pursue graduate training or graduate students interested in receiving additional cystic fibrosis-related research training.
Each applicant must work with a faculty sponsor on a research project related to CF. The stipend is $2,000 and is paid directly to the sponsoring institution.

Prerequisites

Applicants must be bona fide students enrolled in high school, in a bachelor's, master's, or a
doctoral program (i.e. Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D.). Applicants need not be U.S. citizens or hold a U.S. permanent visa to apply for this award. International applicants and institutions are required to submit additional information in
accordance with U.S. anti-terrorist restriction Previous research experience is not a requirement. Applicants must work with a faculty sponsor on a research project related to cystic fibrosis. The project should be for the duration of 10 weeks or more.

 

Rheumatology

Alleghany Health Network's Asthma, Allergy and Autoimmunity Institute Summer Research Internship Program

Program Description

The Autoimmunity Institute (AI) at Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is seeking applicants for its Class of 2017 Summer Internship Program. The AI Summer Internship Program, based in Pittsburgh, PA, offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree students the opportunity to conduct an independent research project over the course of an eight-week internship under the mentorship of an AI faculty member. Interns gain experience in all aspects of the research process including reviewing relevant literature, developing experimental protocols, conducting experiments at the bench, and analyzing data. Interns also write an abstract and deliver an oral presentation of their project to AI faculty and staff at the end of the internship. In order to highlight the translational nature of our research, our program includes numerous opportunities for interns to shadow physicians as well as a series of didactic lectures focused on specific disease areas and human subjects' research.

 

Rheumatology Research Foundation- Medical Student Research Preceptorship

Program Description

A full-time clinical or research mentorship with an established rheumatology professional; students can choose a four- or eight-week clinical preceptorship or an eight-week research preceptorship. Purposes:
Encourage medical and graduate students to consider a career in rheumatology.

Prerequisites

Preceptor must be an ACR or ARHP member at the time of submission and for the duration of the award (students are not required to be members).
A preceptor may be eligible to receive the award multiple times; however, they must work with a different student each time. Previous student/preceptor pairs are not eligible to apply again. Students enrolled in LCME or AOA COCA accredited medical schools, undergraduate students who have been accepted into medical school, students enrolled in an accredited graduate school, or undergraduate students who have been accepted into graduate school, are eligible to apply.
Previous student participants are not eligible.
Students may apply during any year of their medical or graduate studies and must have identified a preceptor by the time of the application.
Individuals who are personally related to the proposed student are not eligible to serve as the student's preceptor.

 

Urology

American Urological Association and UCF- Herbert Brendler Summer Medical Student Fellowship

Program Description

The Summer Medical Student Fellowship Program is a chance for outstanding medical students to pursue urology research by engaging them in summer research fellowships alongside world-class urologic scientists. Awardees receive $4,000 stipends to support them during a ten-week mentored research experience. These awards are made possible thanks to the generous support of the Herbert Brendler, MD Research Fund, Arkansas Urologic Society and Florida Urological Society, as well as the Urology Care Foundation, the official foundation of the AUA.

Prerequisites

To be eligible to compete for a 2017 Urology Care Foundation Summer Medical Student Fellowship, the applicant must be either a current or matriculating medical student and must fit the following criteria for at least one of the following funding sources:
The sponsoring institution must be an accredited medical research institution within
the boundaries of the AUA Sections (https://www.auanet.org/about/sections.cfm).
Arkansas Urologic Society Summer Medical Student Fellowship: the applicant must be either a current or matriculating medical student from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine. The fellowship may be conducted at any institution within the geographical boundaries of the AUA Sections, but the student must enter or return to the University of Arkansas following the fellowship summer. Florida Urological Society Summer Medical Student Fellowship: the applicant must be either a current or matriculating medical student within the state of Florida. The research must be performed in an appropriate academic laboratory or medical facility within the state of Florida.

 

The Ferdinand C. Valentine medical Student Research Grants in Urology

Program Description

The New York Academy of Medicine is pleased to announce the competition for The Ferdinand C. Valentine Medical Student Research Grants in Urology. The grants are awarded to MD candidates who are either enrolled in a New York-area medical school or plan to conduct research at a New York-area institution, to pursue 10-12 week mentored summer research projects in urology.

Prerequisites

Competition is open to MD candidates attending medical school or conducting research in the greater New York area (New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, or New Jersey). Funding will be provided for research projects lasting between ten (10) and twelve (12) weeks in the summer of the upcoming year, preferably between the first and second years of medical school, but medical students in any year of their education may apply. Students are encouraged to pursue research projects that extend beyond the startup period. Students enrolled in combined MD/PhD programs are not eligible for this program. Additionally, eligible candidates are required to be a US citizen, permanent resident of the US, or authorized to work in the US for the period of time covered by this proposed award.
